Boston Midnight Marathon Bike Ride Guide
My guide is simple
- It is all depends on your bike skill. If you have never done 45k rides please train and do them in advance. This is a baseline. You don't go there if you have not done such rides before.
- Another important thing is a night vision, if you have issues with this it is better be safe than sorry. You can hurt yourself and you can hurt others. Remain considerate.
- Before the ride
- Check your bike: breaks, chain, tire, tubes, light. Test everything before the ride. Test that your light lasts at least 5 hours in the cold. Have a spare tube and light.
- Check the weather and use appropriate layering (it is much colder during the night). I recommend winter gear.
- Think that you will be spending around 3 hours in the cold during night time for one-way or 5hours for roundtrip. Ask yourself honestly what do you actually need?
- Prepare food and water. Use electrolytes. I use Noon with Caffeine.
- The Ride
- The ride lasts 2-3 hours for one way and 5-6 hrs for a roundtrip.
- The routes: One-way Ride with GPS, One-way Route Strava, Reverse Route Strava
- There is a nice descent at the beginning so make sure you keep right to allow faster riders to pass. Everything else is fun - ride with the wind.
- Beware of tracks! Cross them at the right angle (90°).
- There is a lot of climbing on Comm Ave. Don't go too hard there you still need power to make to the finish line.
